About ‘Life Luck and Liaisons’
“This book has reminded me of how much we have lost in the last 60 years in terms of self reliance, intuition, adventure and their consequences - all great life lessons. The author has recounted vividly many stories of his youth in an honest and charming way. These stories from school days to farming in NZ to sailing the pacific are recalled in a manner that makes it easy for the reader to see how each event assembles and builds the character of John Burgess through his early life. I'm sure these times will be lost forever and that's a great shame. I'm looking forward to the next installment.” - Stephen King
About ‘Slaughtergate’
“This is a story about the greed of some players in Australia's meat industry that seriously affected their reputation. The author pulls no punches and names the culprits. A great read - 5 Stars!” - Warren Tuohey
“‘Slaughtergate’ by John Burgess is a very interesting book explaining the development of a successful business surrounding the export of beef and sheep meat from Australia and New Zealand to the world markets. An intrepid character took on many hurdles to succeed in this cutthroat industry which was exposed to the issues of meat substitution. He very openly discussed the hurdles he faced and by sticking to good and honest principles. He travelled widely and I wondered if by giving the names of some of these characters he may have been exposing himself to writs which would have been very expensive to defend. But honesty won in the end.
I am not in the meat industry, but enjoyed his approach to difficult, potentially terminal problems that he faced. I think the principles he espoused were of benefit to me in approaching difficult problems. This small book should be on the bookshelf of many businesses.” - Ross Smith
